I think my child needs extra help in school. Where do I even begin?

With back-to-school season well underway, families are focused on establishing new routines, coordinating homework and after school activities, and all the exciting things that come with a new school year. For parents and caregivers of students with disabilities, this season might bring more questions about how to ensure their student is set up for success. The Arc of Spokane’s Parent Coalition gathered common questions asked by families regarding school supports and special education.

I think my child needs extra help at school. Where do I even begin?

Start by writing down the concerns you’re seeing and having a conversation with your student’s teacher. What is happening at home? What is the teacher seeing at school? What supports have already been tried, and are they working? If a disability may be affecting a student’s education, a parent can request an evaluation for special education services through their school district. This evaluation is different from receiving a medical diagnosis and a medical diagnosis is not required for a school to evaluate a student for eligibility for special education services. Families can contact their school district’s special education or “Child Find” office to learn more about requesting an evaluation. It’s also highly recommended that parents put this request in writing so timeline’s are tracked and adhered to.

My child already has an IEP (Individualized Education Program). What should I look for at the beginning of the school year?

Before the school year begins, touch base with your students teacher to discuss any important changes that happened over summer, supports that help them succeed, and to ensure that services needed on day 1 are available (transportation, medical needs, AAC/communication needs, etc.) Take a good look at the students most recent IEP and take note of anything that could be updated. Does the IEP still reflect the student walking into the classroom this fall? An IEP meeting can take place at any time when the parent requests one, not just when annually scheduled.

How Can I Help My Child With a Disability Build Self-Advocacy Skills?

One way to get your child involved in self-advocacy with their education is having them be present for their IEP and 504 meetings. Let them be involved and have a say in what they prefer for supports and services. Over time, children will get practice in speaking up for their needs, identifying good goals for themselves, and working in a collaborative environment. Supporting them while empowering them is key. This applies outside of the classroom setting too – medical appointments, friend groups, social activities, employment, etc.

How Can I Build a Strong Relationship With My Child’s Special Education Team?

A great IEP team is one that communicates and collaborates often outside of the annual meeting. Parents and staff can agree on a communication method, whether it be a weekly email, a daily communication log, recurring phone calls, or other methods that keep the parent informed on progress without overwhelming either side. It’s also important for parents and families to familiarize themselves with all the staff throughout the instructional day: bus drivers, recess monitors, school counselors, after school care, and administrators all play a role in the students education.
