Why a Legislative Kickoff Forum?

One thing The Arc of Spokane hears from families over and over again: “I want to be involved, but I don’t know where to start.”

Enter The Arc of Spokane’s Legislative Kickoff Forum, happening September 24, 2026.

For many people in Eastern Washington, participating in the legislative process can feel overwhelming. Olympia is more than 300 miles away. Between work, school, appointments, therapies, and everyday life, making the trip simply isn’t realistic for most. Even reaching out by email or phone can feel intimidating or uncertain.

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, community members will have the opportunity to meet legislators here in Spokane to ask questions, share their experiences, and have conversations before the next legislative session begins. Legislators and candidates will participate in a moderated Q&A panel about their vision for an inclusive Spokane, followed by time for attendees to connect and continue the conversation.

The event will also feature several organizations that serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), including Informing Families, Northwest Autism Center, People First of Washington, and more. Community members will have the opportunity to learn about local resources, meet representatives from partner organizations, adn connect with others who share an interest in building a more inclusive community.

The Legislative Kickoff is intended to be an approachable introduction to civic engagement. Whether someone is attending their first community event or has participated in advocacy before, everyone is welcome to share their voice. While elected officials spend months reading reports, reviewing budgets, and considering proposed legislation, those don’t always capture the reality for individuals and families who are struggling with the complexities of receiving services or assistance, navigating IEP/504 plans, and limited resource options. The evening is designed to encourage civil conversation, provide opportunities to ask questions, and help community members become more familiar with the legislative process in a relaxed setting.

The Arc of Spokane hopes you’ll join us for an evening of conversation, connection, and community as we kick off the upcoming legislative session.
