The Impact of SNAP Cuts on Vulnerable Communities

When Government Shuts Down, Hunger Rises

Feeding Communities

By Taylor Crisp, Parent to Parent Self Advocate

Halloween may be over, but the real horror remains — hunger.

As Congress continues to delay action, millions of Americans living in low-income households face the loss of vital food assistance. This isn’t just a policy failure. It’s a humanitarian crisis.

Imagine being a parent staring at empty cupboards, unsure how to feed your children. Imagine being elderly, disabled, or unhoused, and not knowing where your next meal will come from. That’s the terrifying reality if funding for SNAP and WIC is cut.

“This is not just politics. These are people’s lives.”

What’s at stake?

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) are federally funded lifelines. They help families afford essential groceries — cereal, cheese, rice, beans, peanut butter, eggs, and formula. These programs aren’t extras. They’re survival.

States rely on federal funding to keep these programs running. Without it, the safety net collapses.

The ripple effect

Even with SNAP, many families are already struggling to afford groceries as food prices climb. Food banks — already stretched thin — will face overwhelming demand. Shelves will empty faster than they can be restocked.

And this crisis hits just as the holidays approach and temperatures drop. For many, winter will bring not warmth and celebration, but cold and hunger.

Who will be impacted?

Cuts to SNAP and WIC will devastate:

Families with children
Pregnant women
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)
Seniors on Social Security or SSI
Medically complex individuals
People experiencing homelessness
Single parents
Women fleeing domestic violence
Family caregivers
Recently laid-off workers

These aren’t just statistics. They’re our neighbors, coworkers, and loved ones. They didn’t choose hardship; they’re simply trying to survive. No one deserves to go hungry, and yet that is exactly what happens when access to SNAP and WIC is restricted or removed.

This is not just politics. These are people’s lives.

No one should have to choose between paying rent and feeding their children. No one should have to skip meals because they’re disabled or elderly. No one should go hungry in the richest country on Earth.

As someone who once relied on these programs, I know firsthand how life-changing they are. They are not handouts — they are lifelines.

In 2023, over 13% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity. That includes more than 14 million children. If SNAP funding disappears, those numbers will skyrocket.

Your vote matters

Elected officials hold the power to protect or dismantle these programs. That’s why voting is not just a right — it’s a responsibility. The upcoming election could determine whether millions eat or go hungry.

Even if it doesn’t feel like it, your vote counts. One vote can change the outcome. One vote can save lives.

Let’s stand up for our communities. Let’s feed our neighbors. Let’s vote for compassion.
