Legislative Kickoff Forum: Nothing About Us Without Us
On September 24, The Arc of Spokane’s Legislative Kickoff Forum gave community members the opportunity to engage directly with elected officials and candidates in a welcoming, accessible environment. The panel focused on priorities that impact individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families ahead of the upcoming Washington legislative session.
The event began with an introduction by self-advocates Taylor Crisp and Courtney Morse. The two discussed their interests outside the advocacy world, including Courtney's involvement in Hoopfest over the last two years. They also highlighted their involvement with the IDD community and barriers they have encountered.
Panelists represented Spokane and surrounding legislative districts that work both locally and in Olympia. Questions surrounded inclusion and accessibility, starting with how to create an inclusive community. The discussion continued into what an inclusive community looks like in Spokane and Olympia.
“The vision for this event was to create a space for people with disabilities to engage with their elected officials and local leaders, but what actually transpired was so much more impactful than that,” said Dana Fletcher, Spokane County Parent Coalition Coordinator. “The room had an energy of unity and connection that you do not see at Legislative events. The evening was centered on the voices of self advocates and families.”
As the panel continued, participants shared personal stories about their experience working with and in the IDD community. Panelists described how these experiences have influenced their personal lives and as legislators to create an inclusive community. Further topics included barriers to healthcare access, how to build relationships with representatives and candidates outside the election season and legislative session, along with ways to break down barriers to create an even playing field. After the panel, community members discussed these issues one-on-one with the candidates.
