ON THE JOB

John Courtney

On any given day at his job at Lowe’s, there’s not a moment John Courtney isn’t busy. In the garden department, he’s busy restocking, driving a forklift, helping customers and working the register.

In the five years he’s worked at Lowe’s, Courtney has done just about everything from running self-checkout to pushing carts and helping customers in every department. He says the best part about his job is “the people I work with. It’s very family-oriented here. The managers are great. The employees are great. It makes you feel right at home.”

As a supported employment client, Courtney meets regularly with his job coach to check in and ensure everything is going well for both the employee and employer. He says his experience working with The Arc has been “wonderful!”

Even though the days are busy, Courtney says it’s pretty laid-back working environment. He wanted to work at Lowe’s due to “the environment and the people,” he says.

Courtney is a valued employee at Lowe’s and has received numerous Service Star awards and employee of the month. Service Star awards are given to employees who have received multiple accounts of good customer feedback or have completed big tasks for the store.

Not only does Courtney enjoy working at Lowe’s, the management and other employees also enjoy working with him and support him in the workplace. Often if Courtney is working the closing shift, one of the assistant store managers will give him a ride home so he doesn’t have to take the bus late at night or pick him up early in the morning to attend store meetings. “They really look out for you here,” Courtney says.
