DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH

Every March we celebrate Developmental Disabilities (DD) Awareness Month and take the opportunity to highlight individuals with DD and raise awareness about the inclusion of people with DD in all facets of our community. Join The Arc of Spokane in commemorating DD Awareness Month throughout March with various events, workshops and partnerships in our community! Our work isn’t confined to the month of March; we continue to advocate for a more inclusive world every day so that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can have greater independence and involvement in our community.

  • People with DD can lead fulfilling and active lives. It's important to recognize their individual abilities, strengths, and desires and the benefit they can bring to our communities. People with DD are capable of:

    • Working: With the right support and accommodations, many people with DD become valuable employees and make significant contributions to the workforce.

    • Socializing: People with DD can build meaningful relationships, enjoy social activities, and participate in their communities.

    • Become educated: Some individuals with DD pursue higher education and attend college or specialized educational programs.

    • Achieve independence: Many individuals with DD live independently or in supportive living arrangements, depending upon their needs and preferences.

    • Family life: Individuals with DD become parents and raise families.

    • Community engagement: People with DD can be active members of society, advocating for their rights and participating in various community activities.

We’ve partnered with local artist Kassy Kilayko to create a special DD Awareness Month sticker that can be found at various events in the Spokane and Tri-County areas during the month of March.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

For Indaba Cares on Friday, March 7, 10% of sales from Indaba Coffee Roasters will go to The Arc of Spokane in celebration of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month! This includes in-store and online sales.

Fortunata Tattoo Studio is also donating 10% of sales from their First Friday flash event on March 7 from noon-8 p.m. to The Arc of Spokane! Indaba is giving away a free coffee coupon for everyone who gets one of the flash designs during the event.
