The Arc of Spokane’s Sexual Abuse Awareness and Response program works to end sexual abuse of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) by educating disability professionals, parents, guardians, and family caregivers about how to recognize abuse and correctly respond to it.

Our Purpose

Many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are vulnerable to sexual abuse and exploitation. The Arc of Spokane's Sexual Abuse Awareness and Response program works to educate caregivers, professionals and individuals in the community about sexual abuse. Often supports are not known or unavailable to people in crisis. This program provides best-practices in offering support and available community-based healing options.

Our Services

Our Disability Professionals Trainer provides the following activities and services:

Sexual Abuse Awareness and Response training

This 90 minute (or more, based on the needs of the organization or group) training works to end sexual abuse of people with IDD by educating disability professionals, parents, guardians, family caregivers, community members, individuals and first responders about how to recognize abuse and correctly respond to it. Our goal with this training is to help keep individuals safe.

In this free training, you will learn:

  • Definition of Sexual Assault

  • Rates of Sexual Assault

  • Signs of potential abuse

  • Cyber-bullying

  • Response techniques

  • Reporting guidelines

Parent Meetings

These meetings will help parents, guardians, and family caregivers understand these risks of sexual abuse and exploitation and know how to respond. There is no cost to attend.
