The Partnership

People with developmental disabilities are uniquely vulnerable to sexual abuse and exploitation.  The Partnership helps prevent sexual abuse through a program of education targeting individuals, families, care providers and the community.  Informational presentations and community events throughout the year build awareness and provide opportunities for valuable dialogue.  Activities include:

Safety Rally - Each year The Partnership hosts a safety rally at the city bus station in downtown Spokane where hundreds of young adults with developmental disabilities learn important principles about personal safety.

Guys and Gals Groups - Talking openly about relationships helps young adults with developmental disabilities understand what is appropriate behavior when interacting with the opposite sex.  An important part of The Partnership's education effort, Guys and Gals groups are held regularly during the school year.

Educational Presentations
The Partnership also helps educate parents, family members, professional educators and caregivers about the risks of sexual abuse among people with developmental disabilities through lectures, presentations and seminars.

To be a part of the Safety Rally, a Guys and Gals group, or to have someone speak to your group about sexual exploitation of people with developmental disabilities, contact Threresa Fears at (509) 328-6326 or

SUCCESS STORY

The following letter was written by a student who attended the Partnership's annual Safety Rally at the STA Plaza:

Dear Theresa,

Thank you for letting my class come to the safety Rally. It is important to be Safe in the community because there are some people that are not safe people to hang out with or be with if you don't know them and they might try something. It is important to say no to that person. If you are not safe go some where that you are safe. It's important to be safe were ever you are.
