Homeownership Opportunities

Homeownership offers people with developmental disabilities greater independence, financial security and social stability. But buying a home can be complicated. The Arc's Homeownership Opportunities program helps people with developmental disabilities and their families overcome the challenges of buying a home by providing assistance and counseling about:

  • Qualifying for a mortgage
  • Finding favorable lending terms
  • Applying for a loan
  • Finding the right house
  • Making an offer and closing
  • Long-term financial management
  • Maintaining the home after purchase

We help participants develop an action plan that breaks down the complex tasks of homeownership into manageable pieces that can be implemented over months or years, if necessary. Participants' action plans are designed around their strengths and abilities, giving them full ownership of the process from start to finish.

To be eligible, participants must:
  • Have a documented developmental disability that 1) substantially limits at least three major life activities such as self-care, learning, mobility, etc., 2) occurred before age 22, and 3) is expected to continue indefinitely.
  • Meet household income requirements and qualify for funding and down payment assistance programs.
  • Purchase a new or existing single-family home or condominium in the Spokane area.
  • Complete our orientation and homebuyer education classes.
